Art therapy in schools
There are a growing number of Art Therapists working within mainstream schools. This rise in therapies being offered to children is partly due to the growing recognition and a wealth of neurological evidence to support that emotionally regulated children are more 'engaged' in their learning. A child who struggles to regulate their emotions will find their ability and capacity to learn greatly affected, as well as their ability to make and maintain relationships.
"Continual emotional distress can create deficits in a child's intellectual abilities, crippling the capacity to learn"
(Goleman,1997.P.27)
Art therapy can help a child to express and share their difficulties, whilst feeling 'contained'. Images can feel like a very safe and non intrusive way of expressing difficult emotions. Over time, it becomes possible for the child to begin to feel more regulated and less overwhelmed. This will have a positive impact on the child's self -esteem, confidence and ability to learn.
